Pelagornis

Pelagornis was a sea-bird that looked, and may have lived, a bit like a modern albatross. Unlike a modern bird, Pelagornis was huge – its wingspan was over 6m and its beak was serrated with tooth-like spikes. For millions of years from the end of the Cretaceous until it disappeared around 2.5 million years ago, these birds roamed the southern oceans where they may have hunted for fish or squid.  Pelagornis fossils are found all around the world, including at Beaumaris on Victoria’s southern coast.
