Allocasuarina
Today, Allocasuarina, more commonly known as she-oaks, are relatively familiar flowering plants often found growing together in groups on rocky slopes and cliff-tops. Adapted to dry conditions and poor soils, Allocasuarina became increasingly common across Australia as the continent became dryer during its northward migration. Evidence from fossil pollen tells us that for a long time Allocasuarina may have dominated the landscape, only reducing in importance when fire, to which it is poorly adapted, became more frequent in the environment. Despite this, several species of Allocasuarina remain part of the modern Tasmanian plant flora.
